The **Sharifian colours** are the four tinctures — black, white, green and red — chosen by the Hashemite Sharif Hussein of Mecca for the Flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916. They are the immediate origin of the modern pan-Arab palette and survive in the closely related flags of Jordan, Palestine and historic Iraq, Syria and Hejaz. The arrangement combines a red triangle at the hoist with three horizontal bands of black, white and green.
**Example**: The flag of Jordan, with its white seven-pointed star on the red hoist triangle, retains the Sharifian arrangement almost unaltered.
