Field

The **field** is the background surface of a flag, upon which charges are laid. A field may be of a single tincture (a plain field), divided into stripes or quarters, or composed of more complex partitions. The colours of the field carry as much symbolic weight as the charges placed upon them, and many flags are recognised first by the arrangement and colours of their field.

**Example**: The plain red field of the flag of Morocco bears a single green pentagram, the Seal of Solomon, as its charge.
