Dexter

**Dexter** is a heraldic term, retained in vexillology, denoting the side of a flag or shield that is on the bearer’s right and therefore on the viewer’s left. The dexter side corresponds to the hoist of a flag flown from a staff on the viewer’s left. Dexter is conventionally the more honourable side, and charges of greater importance are placed there.

**Example**: On the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom, the three lions passant guardant of England occupy the dexter chief quarter, the most honourable position.
