Charges may be geometric (crosses, saltires, bars), heraldic (lions, eagles, crowns), symbolic (stars, crescents) or naturalistic (trees, mountains). The placement, tincture and proportion of a charge are governed by the rules of the design and, where applicable, by heraldry.
