Monochrome

A **monochrome** flag is one displayed in a single tincture, without contrasting bands or charges. Plain monochrome flags are uncommon among modern national designs but have historical and ideological significance: the plain green flag of Libya from 1977 to 2011 was the only national flag of a single colour, and plain black, red or white flags have served as the banners of various political and religious movements.

**Example**: The plain green flag of Libya under Gaddafi was the only national flag of monochrome design in the twentieth century.
