Hoist-end

The **hoist-end** is the vertical edge of a flag attached to the staff, halyard or sleeve. It is the edge by which the flag is bent on to its means of suspension and is usually reinforced with canvas, a rope (the boltrope), or grommets. The hoist-end is also referred to as the leech in some maritime contexts.

**Example**: A grommeted flag has brass or stainless rings set into a canvas heading at the hoist-end through which the halyard is run.
