Argent

**Argent** is the heraldic tincture silver, depicted in practice as white. With Or it makes up the two heraldic metals. In monochrome engravings argent is shown by leaving the surface plain. Argent is associated with peace and sincerity. Where a national flag includes a white panel that derives from heraldry, that panel is properly blazoned argent rather than ‘white’.

**Example**: The white cross on the red field of the flag of Switzerland is blazoned ‘Gules, a cross couped Argent’.
